the trons – times up

who doesn’t like a little michel gondry with their robot band

Video by Snakebeings filmed in Matangi dairy factory. The Trons are a robot band made by Greg Locke. Some animation has been used in this video but the Trons play all the music on electric guitar and drums and keyboard. Vocals are made using a special vocal–tape deck built into the singer’s control unit. The robots are actually playing the song in the video although the actual song has been overdubbed afterwards- lip-synch robots! The great benifit of making a video of robots is that they play the music the same every time-in theory at least- although due to the flexibility of meccano there is a human feel in the slight delays.

robotic gamelan

A video on Casa da Música’s Robotic Gamelan, developed by myself, José Luís Azevedo and Miguel Ferraz in 2008/09. It started as an evolution of ‘Lula’ – vimeo.com/1379563 . The sound is awful, sorry about that!

A network of several independent robots play some of the javanese gamelan instruments: 2 bonangs, 2 demungs, 3 kenongs, 1 saron, 2 peking and 1 slentem, some gongs and an additional slentem in the near future. This network is controlled by a computer sending serial information using Max/MSP.

In this specific case, all the robots are being played using custom controllers made out of an Ikea salad bowl, an Arduino and two ultrasonic distance sensors.

autonomous emotional scottish robot band

Inspired by early 19th century mechanical bands such as the nickelodeon, Cybraphon is an interactive version of a mechanical band in a box.

Consisting of a series of robotic instruments housed in a large display case, Cybraphon behaves like a real band. Image conscious and emotional, the bands performance is affected by online community opinion as it searches the web for reviews and comments about itself 24 hours a day.

A needle oscillates between desolation and delirium, measuring Cybraphon’s happiness as it monitors its popularity in Google, friend invitations on Facebook and comments to its MySpace page.

pat metheny – orchestrion pt. 2

mr. metheny’s put out another video of his work with the robot orchestra.  this one goes into more detail, shows more of the robots, talks about how they’re controlled.  still pretty cool.
